Microsoft released the first Windows 10 and 11 Patch Tuesday updates of 2024 last week, including January updates KB5034122 and KB5034123, respectively. Updates are intended to address security issues within Windows. The version for 11 also fixes recent Wi-Fi issues where the network won't connect or the Wi-Fi icon won't appear.
In a separate article, the company also detailed a fix for a Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) security vulnerability that could lead to BitLocker encryption bypass. This issue is being tracked with ID "CVE-2024-20666". Microsoft said the security flaw could allow attackers to bypass BitLocker encryption if they have physical access to an unpatched PC.
However, this is not one of the WinRE updates that installs seamlessly on your PC. Users are reporting that update installation fails with the error message "0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE", which indicates insufficient WinRE partition size.
The solution is to manually resize the partition. You can do so by following this dedicated guide here.
Neowin forum supervisor/mod and ESET noted researcher Aryeh Goretsky (X account) also experienced the issue, which could be resolved by increasing the recovery partition.

I can confirm that the KB5034441 hotfix fails on a Windows 10 VM with a Windows recovery partition of size 511MB. I decided to increase the size to 1024MB in case I need more space later.
Afterwards, the hotfix installed successfully.

Of course, Microsoft has known about this problem almost from the beginning, and has been recommending a manual resizing workaround as soon as it published the WinRE update. Yesterday, the company added the issue to the Windows Status Dashboard and added a note that a fix will be available in a future update.
